Sally Miller, CIO North America for DHL Supply Chain, presented the PDM. We learned about DHL Supply Chain’s Digitalization process to utilize technology to improve operations. DHL Supply Chain is the world’s largest contract logistics specialist. In the North America region, U.S. and Canada, they have over 30,500 employees, 417 locations, 115 million square feet of warehouses and 235 customers. We were able to see videos of two types of robots being implemented. One (EFFIE cart) follows a picker, then returns to a station when full, and another (LOCUS light) that allows a picker to stay in one area where the robot will go to the location and display what is to be picked. Another video Sally presented was on Vision Picking, utilizing smart glasses that show the location where the item is to be picked and what to pick. Hackathons are being used to promote ideas from employee teams that can be developed into products. In 2017, North America had 22 teams with 70 participants from not only IT, but also HR and Operations. Sally closed the presentation reviewing DSC’s vision: We want to be the supply chain solutions company for the world; we want to be an innovation powerhouse; we want to exploit technologies that will change the way we work and reinvent the customer experience, and we want to drive growth through new and disruptive business models.
